I knew I liked this guy…

Check out this quote from St. John Chrysostom:

We must not mind insulting men, if by respecting them we offend God. — St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople and Church Father (349–407)

I love it, but it could me a slippery slope, my friend! :)

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately there are lots of slippery slopes around.

And of course, some of us don’t need any coaxing to go down that road anyway. But it *is* a great quote. And I even used it in my sermon yesterday: Jesus was certainly not afraid to offend the pharisees/sadducees when he healed on the Sabbath because the alternative was to offend God. Likewise the formerly-blind man wasn’t afraid to goad them a bit by asking them if they wanted to be Jesus’ disciples too.

I think that’s why we need other people around us who are faithful to the God-man from Nazareth to keep us in check when those of us with certain inclinations let them get out of hand. The reverse is also true… without a willingness to offend and call a spade a spade, we’d never get anywhere with repentance and forgiveness.
