The paper presents a complete and lucid outline of a public service of healing that is rooted in a penitential rite with Eucharist. The theological underpinning for this setting is set forth well and mention is made that a full-text bulletin would be available to aid in following the service. The outline adeptly addresses the need for healing and repentance both for the individual and the community as a whole. The service as outlined honors the “twin affirmations that we can never allow our own pain to lead us… to harm others and that God … does have a ‘gracious ear.’” Hymnody is carefully chosen and supports the theologically coherent service that effectively addresses the wounds in the congregation caused by mutual blame and recrimination.
